Sashiko literally means "little stabs" or "little pierce" and is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching/funcitonal embroidery, that started out of practical need during the 1600's. Traditionally it was used to mend and repair worn clothing, now it is used for purely decorative purposes. 
Beware...it can become addictive!!
